Series #ArquiteturaHoje travels across Brazil to uncover architectural legacy

A brand-new series premieres on February 13 on the Arte1 channel and features five episodes airing every Thursday.

The Arte1 channel launches the new series Arquitetura Hoje! this Thursday (13), at 8:30 PM. The original production explores the ancestral knowledge and technologies created by Afro-Brazilian culture, which influence how Brazilian architecture is produced and understood.

The project was conceived and is hosted by architect and researcher Gabriela de Matos, who traveled across the country to showcase examples and reflect on this legacy. The series is produced by Na Laje Filmes.

“We visited Bahia, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo to show how we think about architecture in very different ways, according to the cultural characteristics present in each territory. And how that impacts the places, people’s everyday lives, and intersects with both local and global discussions, including climate issues,” anticipates Gabriela.

The series invites viewers on a rich journey that celebrates diversity through the connection between contemporary Afro-Brazilian architecture, urbanism, and culture. For Gabriela, it’s a chance to immerse oneself in new perspectives, places, and stunning imagery.

Director Pedro Urizzi emphasizes the choice to build a fluid narrative, just as Black architecture shapes the world: “By prioritizing orality and active listening, we aimed to translate into image and sound the idea that inhabiting is a collective act—both in physical and cinematic space.”

In practice, each of the five episodes flows continuously, with a visual and narrative language shaped by the theme. “Arte1’s editorial line allows us to subvert rigidity and formalism in favor of magic,” explains the director.

“In this historic moment when spotlights are turned to Brazilian audiovisual, creating a documentary series that rescues the history of Black architecture in our country reinforces the importance of believing in and investing in national productions,” celebrates Regina Campos, founder of Na Laje Filmes.

In the premiere episode, Gabriela visits Salvador to explore how the intangible symbols of African culture relate to Brazilian architecture and urbanism. Architect and professor Fabio Velame and architect-researcher Vilma Patrícia are interviewed. The episode also features a visit to Filhos de Gandhy and a testimony from director Xiko Lima.

Arquitetura Hoje! has five episodes and airs Thursdays on Arte1 channel.
